PTLC Mini Grant

The Professional Teaching and Learning Center at Belle Glade offers mini grants to members of the faculty and staff who wish to pursue educational initiatives to benefit the Belle Glade campus.

Previous Mini Grant Recipients

  • Dr. Esther Berry (2006-2007)
    "Read and Discuss"

2006 Mini Grant - Dr. Esther Berry ordered 5 copies of the following titles: A Civil Action, The Glass Menagerie, To Kill a Mockingbird, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, and The Bluest Eye.  She used these books to engage her College Preperatory Reading students in discussions and empower them to read.  They demonstrated knowledge of patterns of organization, authors' tone, purpose, stated and implied main ideas, and other essential reading skills as a result of this project.

2007 Mini Grant - In phase 2 of the Read and Discuss project, Dr. Berry plans to use Manchild in the Promised Land by Claude Brown to further engage the students.

  • Dr. Lee Liang (2006-2007)
    "Barn Owl Boxes"

Barn Owls in Belle Glade Barn Owl Boxes

2006 Mini Grant - Dr. Liang constructed 2 owl boxes for the Belle Glade campus.  The boxes have successfully attracted owls, and several owlettes have hatched.  The owls have reduced the rodent population on campus and have given the Microbiology and Environmental Conservation students something very interesting to study - owl pellets.  The security staff also appreciates the nightly owl serenades.

2007 Mini Grant - The first two owl boxes were such a success that Dr. Liang plans to set up two more this year.

  • Professor Stephen Gibson (2007)
    "Poetry Festival Student Sponsorship"

Professor Gibson plans to purchase tickets for a limited number of students to attend the Third Annual Palm Beach Poetry Festival in January of 2008.

  • Professor Lyndon Johnson (2006)
    "EnableLearning Pilot Testimonials"

Professor Lyndon Johnson created a testimonial video of students who had used the EnableLearning website the previous semester.  The students said that using the software helped them feel better prepared and more confident in math.

  • Dr. Lee Liang/Roz McFarlane and the Dream It, Do It Club (2006)
    "Butterfly Garden"

In addition to beautifying the campus, the butterfly garden will give students a way to relieve stress and learn about the environment and local plant life.
