Frequently Asked Questions

Is completing the work-study application enough to obtain a position?

No, your application is going to be sent to various departments on campus where the positions are available. Obtaining a work-study position depends on how well the student performs in the interview and what positions are available. Remember there are many students competing for the same position.

Do I need to be register for classes to be eligible for work-study?

Yes, one of the eligibility requirements for work-study is that the student must be registered in at least six (6) credits during the semester he or she wants to work.

Is there a limit of hours I can work during a day?

Yes, the student can work the hours he/she wants if agreed upon by the supervisor not to exceed 8 hours per day. It is necessary to remember that the limit of hours allowed per week and to take at least a thirty minutes break after working five consecutive hours.

If I commit a violation what is next?

You will receive a violation notification by mail. The second violation you and your supervisor will receive a notification by e-mail and if you commit a third violation, you will be terminated. After a third violation, unfortunately, you will no longer be eligible for Work-Study.

If I do not like the position or the department where I am working may I transfer to another department?

Yes, if there is a position available; however, the student must go through an interview process to obtain the position.

What happens when I turn in my time sheet late?

It is necessary to make an adjustment in the payroll system and as a result you will not be paid until the next pay period.

What is the difference between the Student Assistant Program and the Work-Study Program?

The Work-study program is based on federal funding and the Student Assistant Program is based on institutional funding.

Can I work for both programs?

No, you can only be hired for one of them depending on your eligibility.

Can I work more than one job?

A student can only work one job under the Work-Study Program.

Can I work during the summer?

Yes, only if a student is registered for a class, is in good academic standing, and is seeking a degree.

Can I get direct deposit for my Work-Study payroll check?

Yes, interested students must contact the Payroll Office on campus.
